Any thoughts? Delrin or Polycarb? Regular or Slick Pick? Are the sizes on par with Dunlop or other brands? Is the Slick Option a proficient pick for bluegrass banjo or is it ane of those picks designed for guitarists who want to flatpick with a pollex-pick? In the Slick Pick category, do you folks recommend calorie-free, medium, heavy or extra heavy? Is the regular thumb-pick comparable in size to a minor, medium or large pollex-choice from Kel Kroydon or Dunlop?

I currently use large Kel Kroydon or Dunlop thumb-picks.

Whatever opinions would be appreciated.

I Love the Kelly Picks. I've used both, but prefer the regulars. I've tried all three weights and the mediums work all-time to my ears. I would consider them similar a medium size equally compard to Dunlo etc. HOWEVER, the blade is a bit shorter than about other brands which is adept for some playing, but bad for other tunes where you have to accomplish dorsum and along quite a scrap. I've recently switched to Kel Kroydon picks and Planet Waves.

My favorite is the Zookies L #10 (made by Dunlop). It has simply the correct stiffness and seems to terminal longer (wears out more slowly) than other types I take used.

Is this the same Chris Quinn, who once said "never wear picks more interesting than your picking?"

Bill Hayes turned me on to the Fred Kelly Slick Picks and I gotta admit I'm a catechumen. They exercise article of clothing down on the tip after a while and I discover that I demand to alter picks every set or two because they tend to stretch out (they will recover original shape). I've never broken one.

I honestly don't know what mine are made of. They're opaque orange and stamped medium estimate, I can tell you that. And they're inexpensive and quality command is such that they're all pretty much identical, so swapping them out takes no adjustment at all.

The blade on these picks is pretty short so if you're used to a longer bract yous might not like them. I similar the shorter bract (I used to trim my modified Dunlops before I started with these). I did discover that the short blade coupled with the shape of the band made it more probable that I'd snag the 5th string. Problem solved by nipping the outer corner of the band on a 45 degree angle, to a depth of about 3/sixteen", before using them. Works for me, anyway.

I have small to mid-size thumbs and I go a decent fit on them. They practice stretch to some extent, equally noted - just if your paws are of meaning size y'all might want to attempt a larger size.

Hey, like I said, they're inexpensive. Buy ane of each and play around a little. I'm quite certain you'll find this advice just as useful equally every other chip of pick advice offered up here on the Hangout.

I love the slick picks. I have tried all three thicknesses and theay are all fine, although I call back I like the calorie-free the best. My hands are small and they fit great. It is the only thumbpick that I will use. The blade is short which helps my tendency to choice too deep and hit the head occasionally.

I've tried most of Fred Kelly'due south picks, and I find that about all of them produce a sparse audio when used on the 5-string banjo. Plus they are too curt for my gustatory modality and they take a tendency to break in half during FMB.

I really similar the audio I get with the Fred Kelly Delrin picks, either the heavy or ten-tra heavy (white colour) pick. I likewise can pick a fleck cleaner and faster with them because the delrin material is slick and doesn't drag on the cord as much every bit plastic. The simply problem I have with them is the wrap-around isn't long enough and I constantly have a problem with hanging on the fith string. With plastic pollex picks I can heat the wrap-around and turn the end up to prevent the hanging, but I haven't been able to exercise that with the Delrin. Every time I try I current of air upward breaking the pick. Also the shape of the blade is broad with a brusk, sharp niggling tip, and later that tip wears away, the audio gets as well mellow, and the blade gets likewise short (as it is farily short to begin with).

If FK made the Delrin slick pick with a slight longer bract (and perchance a more conventional shape) and a longer wrap-around I would be using them.

Bottom line, I quit using the Fred Kelly picks and am having good luck with the Dunlop medium, brown colored picks.
